This set is EXTREMELY versatile, because of the fact that it covers many types, requires very little set-up, and after you do set up, you can sometimes sweep 2-4 of an enemy team. Agiligross should be sent out when an opportunity to set up presents itself. The ability to spot these opportunities only comes with experience using Agiligross. For example, your opponent sends out a Blissey with a Wish based set. This would usually be Wish, Seismic Toss, Toxic, and Protect. Toxic doesn't effect Metagross. Seismic Toss is will always do 100 base damage, but is still not an incredible threat. Wish and protect are simply use to stall. So, therefore, Switching Agiligross in on Blissey for setup is not a bad idea. Either Blissey uses wish or protect which won't affect whta you're about to do, or they switch. Both options give you a free Agility, so there's you're setup. After only 1 agility Metagross will outspeed almost everything in the OU tier. That coupled with his amazing Attack gives you a sweeper that is not easily beaten. Obviously, the Adamant nature is for a little boost in the Attack category. The Life Orb is just more power for him, but could be replaced with Leftovers. The moveset chosen for Agiligross is to give him STAB when Super Effective damage isn't possible, and to cover as many types as possible.

There are a LOT of other options for Metagross, but this is, in my opinion, the best. Other options would include Lead setup:

Lead
Lum Berry
Clear Body
Adament
EVs: 248 HP/ 236 Atk/ 24 Spe
Stealth Rock
Earthquake
Bullet Punch
Explosion

This Lead setup has been very popular the last little while in the OU metagame. Reason being, Metagross can get up Stealth Rock. No matter what happens, Metagross will almost always get Stealth Rock up. The purpose of this lead setup is to get Stealth Rock up very early and then deal with many other popular leads. It almost combines a standard lead and Anti Lead Setup. With his superior typing, his exceptional defense and so-so SpD, he can survive a lot. With investment in Def and SpD EVs, not much will OHKO. So first turn Stealth Rock is set up. Next, your opponents first move left you with little HP and you know you won't survive another hit. Leads such as this don't have great use later in the game, so this is where you explode. Might as well take them out with you.

These are a couple of the most popular Metagross sets. If you wanted a sweeper that didn't require any setup, you could throw a moveset together for Metagross. Physical Wall? There's a moveset for that. The possibilities are nearly endless with Metagross.

I would definitely recommend Metagross to any player. If you're going to set up, it can be done in as little as 1 turn. With the lead set, you are almost guaranteed to get Stealth Rock out. If you'd rather just switch and sweep, Life Orb Metagross can be devastating. I have a fair bit of experience with Metagross and I'll say, He's my favorite. Not because he looks cool, or he's good ingame on the DS. His usefulness in today's metagame is very great.

So, last but not least. Counters. I will tell you the one thing that will stop Agiligross in it's tracks. Dual Screener Bronzong. Earthquake misses because of Levitate. Meteor Mash is not very effective. Thunder Punch does meager damage. The moveset of Agiliross just has nothing for it. When Revenge Killers are mentioned, nothing pops into mind. I'll edit if I find any.
