Here is a full explanation on what EV's are, and how to EV train... this may be long... but i'll try to make it as clear as possible...

ok, when a pokemon kills another pokemon, it gets what's called "Effort Points" also known as Effort Value.... (a.k.a. EV)... each pokemon, wild or trained, is given a set amount of EV points... example: a bidoof (from the wild or from a trainer, it's all the same) will give you +1 attack EV... ok? so, you now have gotten 1 (one) attack EV, so, for each +4 EV points you earn, your stat for that skill goes up by one point.... so, say you kill nothing but bidoofs between the level of 35 to 36... and you kill 24 bidoofs, that's 24 total EV points added up, so that's +6 Attack points you'll get when you next level up, as opposed to the regular +2 or +3... get it?

now, each pokemon is allowed a MAXIMUM of 510 EV points, as to prevent it from growing uber powerful, AND... each stat (attack, defense, speed, etc)
is also only allowed a maximum of 255 points to be added to it (half the total EV points allowed)

This can allow two things... you can completely max out 2 stats on a single pokemon (giving it 255 EV points on one stat, and 255 EV points on another) or... you can evenly balance the total 510 EV points more to your likely, how you train is up to you... once you obtain all 510 EV points, your pokemon can still grow in strength... but you can no longer control how the stats themselves grow, they grow from then on based solely on IV's and Base Stats...

now, on to Vitamins....

Vitamins are Carbos, HP up, iron, Zinc, Protein, and Calcium... each time you use ONE of these items, it is equivalent to obtaining +10 EV points of the stat it is meant for.... so using these vitamins appropriately will dramatically help in EV training... however, a pokemon is allowed no more than 10 vitamins (+100 EV points) to each stat (without going over the 510 EV point limit)... this is to prevent uber maxing out stats, without actually working for it.....

Telling how many EVs you have left.... as far as i know, there is NOT a way to tell... the best thing to do is use a pencil and paper, and just use tally marks or something along those lines, so you know exactly how many points you have used... also, you can go to pokemon.marriland.com to see what each pokemon is worth, as far as EV points go...

so there it is... as clearly as i can explain it... if you have any questions.. fell free to ask.... and good luck with the training....
Ok this guide will be long and lengthy only the those who can tough it out and read everything carefully will full understand how to optimize your time and ev training.

There are some basic rules to ev training
- EV Training Allows you top 255 EV's in 2 stats.
- You should Ev Train stats the pokemon specializes in rather than to cover its weakness
- There is no point in ev training if you dont have the right nature
- If you want to go the extra mile you can IV Breed which means have the IV's match the nature so you know there will be no pokemon of the same species out there that is tougher than yours. (Takes about 30 pokes on avg hatched to get the right nature and iv's) Nature alone is fine though
- Natures give u a 10% Boost
- IV's I am uncertain but probably give a big boost as well
- You need a ditto to breed and get the nature you want
- Every FOUR EV's gives you ONE stat gain.

Usually people ev train fighting wild pokemon but if you want to optimize your time the key is to fighting trainers with the same type of ev's such as a magikarp trainer (west of eterna city) that gives u speed ev's only or a seaking trainer (south of veilstone) that gives atk ev's.

Now Key Elements you will need to EV Train

- Macho Brace or Power Items releted to the stat yours ev training
- PKRS

how this works:
Macho Brace Doubles EV's
PKRS Doubles EV's
Power Items add 4 EV's

Lets say you kill a machop below are some scenarios

NO PKRS or EV Item Held= 1 Atk EV
With PKRS = 2 Atk EV's
WITH PKRS + Macho Brace 1x2x2= 4 Atk EV's
WITH PKRS + Power Item 1+4=5x2= 10 Atk EV's

See the Difference?

Now it would be different if you killed a Machoke which is not one but 2 atk ev's

NO PKRS or EV Item Held= 2 Atk EV
With PKRS = 4 Atk EV's
WITH PKRS + Macho Brace 2x2x2= 8 Atk EV's
WITH PKRS + Power Item 2+4=6x2= 12 Atk EV's

Fully Optimized you can get a +3 Stat Gain... WOW AMAZING ISN'T IT?

Now usually people ev train 1 pokemon at a time I train 5 at a time, 5 ev trained pokemon in the same amount of time it takes to ev train one.

How this works?

You need to have 5 pokemon whom need ev training in the SAME STATS such as
Magby, Charmander, Gastly, Abra, Misdreavous

All the above pokemones base stats excel in SP ATK and Speed

so you give them speed natures or sp atk natures
i recommend Timid for Speed and Modest for SP Atk

Now you have strong pokemon in your party that can kill anything and wont die.
1 Strong Pokemon
5 Pokes that need EV Training

GIVE THE 5 POKEMON EXP SHARE they also gain ev's of course not as the same rate as the one fighting since the one fighting can hold macho brace or a power item.

Now Effective Places to EV Train.

To EV Train Attack
PI Carlos South of Veilstone has Seakings they are worth 2 atk ev's a pop

To EV Train Speed
Magikarp Trainer West of Eterna City he has 6

To EV Train Special Attack
South of Veilstone a pokemon collector trainer has 3 roselias 2 sp atk ev's a pop

For Defense Fight Geodude's, Gravelers, or Silicoons, Cascoons in Eterna Forest.

For Special Defense Fight Tentacools, Tentacruels.

Well I covered most of it, remember kids dont ev train if you dont have the right nature its not worth it. If you have any questions drop a post.

This is how Razor EV Trains -> Gun_bandana (Old School Traditional Way)

This is how I EV Train -> Tank Tank Tank Tank Tank Tank(Spartan Style)

mwuhahahaha!!!! TO DEATH with Razor and his Clan
Those are some good tips for EV training Prideless. Good job.

On a side note, here are some more EV training spots:

Attack:
Fishing in Lake Valor/Verity/Acuity: Seaking (2) and Gyarados (2)
Route 212: Kricketune (2) and Bibarel (2)

Special Attack:
The old Chateau in Eterna Forest: Ghastly (1) Haunter (2) and Gengar (3)

Speed:
Trophy Garden of Pokemon Mansion: Staravia (2) Pikachu (2) and pichu (1)

Defense:
Iron Island Mines: Graveller (2) Onix (1) and Steelix (2)
Any Pokemon who gets experience from a fight will gain equal EV points.
ev training is fast...heres an example

larvitar adamant and will ev train 252 att 252 speed this is how you do it.

give it 10 proteins (the attack vitamins) that gives it 100 EVs.

152 to go so next you give it pkrs and the attack power item so it gets 6 EVs every time it kills a shinx(which give at EVs) so then you only have to kill 25 shinx

now for speed give it 10 carbos (the speed vitamins) 100 EVs in speed now

152 to go so now it should still have pkrs just switch the power item to the speed one and kill 25 zubats/magikarps

and your done its really easy...

alot of people say "its to low of a level to kill those though..." that doesnt matter, if you day care it or rare candy it to a decent level it wont affect its stats at lvl 100 as long as it gets EV trained eventually.
Due to - Z - lack attendance, I will update this thread to clarify what is EV Training. It seems people have trouble understanding his explanation. I will try to make it short and simple.

Ok what is an EV?

It stands for Effort Value. Basically your pokemon's stats will grow depending on what pokemon it has fought and defeated in battle.

An example.

Machop = 1 Attack EV
Machoke = 2 Attack EV
Machamp = 3 Attack EV

If you beat a machop you gain 1 Attack EV.

===

Now every 4 EV's gives you 1 stat gain.

Many people wonder why when they try to EV Train they dont see a big enough difference?

The reason for this is because EV's are directly applied to a pokemon's base stat.

Therefore the later the evolution the more noticable the stat increase is.

EV Training a Bagon in attack is less noticeable as EV Training a Salamence in attack.

However EV Training a Bagon is no different than EV Training a Salamence. When the Bagon Evolves it will gain the stats accordingly equaling out and bringing the stats to where it should be.

Also the level of the pokemon I believe also determines how much of a difference you can see according to my experience. I see spikes in stat gain at later levels 40-50 range.

You do NOT need to EV Train a pokemon to level 100, when its EV's are in place thats the end of it, fighting online will jack up your stats accordingly there WILL be no stat loss.

I own many pokemon fully ev trained in the mid 20's.

As long as the EV's are their thats all that matters.

Well thats all their is to it.
